How to measure a wall
Measure the height and width of each wall in the room, then multiply them together to get the area. Add together the areas of all the walls you're tiling. Don't subtract small fixtures like sockets, but do subtract large openings such as doors and windows — you can do that above.
How to measure a floor
For a simple rectangular room, multiply the length by the width. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles, measure each one separately, and add the two areas together — that's exactly what the extra area rows above are for.
Tiling a patio or outdoor area? The same steps apply — just select "Outdoor / Patio" above and remember to allow extra wastage for cuts around edges and features.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra should I order for wastage?
We recommend at least 10% extra for straight lay-outs, and 15–20% for diagonal patterns, herringbone, or rooms with lots of cuts and awkward angles.
Do I need to subtract doors and windows?
For walls, yes — subtract large openings such as doors, windows, and built-in units. You don't need to subtract small fixtures like sockets or switches, since your wastage allowance covers those.
What if my room is an unusual shape?
Split the room into smaller rectangles, measure each one, and add an extra area row for each section using the "+ Add another area" button — the calculator will total them all for you.
Where do I find the box coverage for a specific tile?
Box coverage (m² per box) is usually listed on the product page. If it isn't, use the "Work it out from tile size" option and enter the tile's dimensions and pieces per box instead.
